James's work runs from fashion, beauty and portraiture to slower pieces made with time, weather and light. The range is the method.

He took up photography full-time before he then went to work in theatre and film, and the two have run as one line of creative expression ever since. He even worked as an actor, director and producer including for the Royal Shakespeare Company and that theatricality is a major part of his photography: how he directs a subject, how he works with collaborators, his search for narratives, and how he gets a person to embody presence.

He has shot commercially for Myer, Howatson & Co, Puig, Penguin Random House, and Breguet (Swatch Group) among others, and worked closely with agencies including Nice People and Rebel Rebel. For ten years he was one of Glyndebourne's main photographers in the UK, with similar work for the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House alongside other premium cultural and arts brands.

He holds an MA in Photography (Distinction) through Falmouth University (UK).
